Three PROFITABLE ways to make money with Tiny Houses!

There’s a lot of reasons why people go tiny. If you’ve been around for a while, you know that for us it was a combination of ownership, geographic flexibility, and future ROI (return on investment). Today, almost three years into our Tiny journey, we are much closer (financially speaking) to taking the next step and creating our first Tiny House related stream of passive income.

1. Backyard Villa’s are an easy way for a traditional homeowner to make rental income an Accessory Dwelling Unit (like a Tiny house) on their property (just be sure to check if Tiny houses are approved as ADU’s in your local area).

2. Tiny House Hotel’s are a collection of tiny homes, owned by a party and rented out on a short term basis to travelers and potential future tiny home owners. This strategy requires a lot of money up front but it’s the most of the three models we’re discussing.

3. Tiny House Communities are becoming more common and can be run in several different manners. of the most common is for the land owner to simply lay the plumbing, water and electrical infrastructure, and then rent out individual lots to tiny home owners. One of the biggest pro’s to this model is that the property owner has no responsibility for maintenance to the units because each home is owned by the individual renting the lot.

  1. If only we were 30 years younger! We’ve had the same discussions, but between our age to debt ratio and the cost of the infrastructure alone… 🤷🏼👵🏻

But we love you two & have no doubt you’ll succeed in any of your dreams! Thx for sharing them with us in such a succinct and well researched manner.

  2. Super Proud!!!! Keep up the great work by the grace of God! Excellent foresight….looking forward to the day when your thoughts materialize. Y’all got this! 💙y’all, plain and simple.☺

  3. Please do research on demand life after CoronaVirus & take decision accordingly. I would suggest get a land & start with 1 property for airbnb, gradually increase number of properties & convert to tiny house hotel.

  4. How cool is this? Most don’t see Tiny Homes as investments. Would love to see this journey. Bushes, ya’ll are like 1 of 3 family YT channels I can watch without cringing lol. So thanks for the transparency and keep up the good work.

  5. Thanks for the Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) shout out! 🙂 If people ask you follow up questions, send ’em my way!

    • Will do! We have a question for you. Do you have a centralized list of states that allow (specifically) tiny homes as ADUs?

    • @Living Tiny with the Bushes I don’t but would be happy to work on that with you because I love your channel.

We just need to work out exactly what we mean by “tiny home” and “ADU”.

States often have something in the code that says whether you can add a “mobile” home to your property or not, and whether you can rent it out legally or not. Some states specifically define ADUs and the steps to turn a THOW into an ADU. Most places, it’s still the wild west. If you’re going to give people advice, it’s always best to say “Let’s look at your specific address in your specific city/county and state” because all these rules interact in crazy ways and the enforcement usually comes down to a single inspector or planning person in that area. 🙂

The other good person to talk to would be Kol Peterson (he did the Portland Tiny House Hotel). I’ll send you his email.

  6. I just found your channel today through Graham Stephan’s channel (he was responding to your CNBC segment on money). You two are so inspiring! I’m excited to binge watch all of your videos today. Best of luck to you both on your financial journey. 💕

  7. I like the second idea. It reminds me of the Founder movie with Michael Keaton. Don’t try to worry about the franchises, own the land that the franchise is on. I think that’s a smarter lower stress solution.

  8. I love the own the lot & tenants are responsible for their property option. I would still follow your journey if you weren’t living tiny… y’all would need a new name though lol

  9. I saw from a previous video that Kothney-Issa, we got to get you registered to vote. I live in Corinth, TX and hopefully in a tiny home within a few years. If there is anyway I can help or make the process easier or just be your cheer leader, let me know.

  10. Love this couple. Seen them on another channel and had to check them out. Really concidering this life style. Keep it up guys.

  11. I would still stay subscribed for sure! Also I remember seeing a video about a brother and sister team who purchased land that used to be an RV park or campground in the San Diego mountains. They saved a ton of money on permits since it was already zoned and had existing electrical and plumbing. I believe they purchased tiny homes as well as had a few spots available for folks who wants you to bring their tiny home with them. Either way you go, good luck!

  12. Check out Wanderin’ Star Farms in Dripping Springs, TX! We’ve stayed there twice in the tiny cabins. They have 2 or 3 more they are currently building. They also hold events like weddings.

    • Just checked that out on AirB&B! That place looks amazing! That’s sort of what we have in mind. We’d be starting with just one cabin though and growing it from there.

    • Living Tiny with the Bushes They started with 3 and now they also have a yurt which is amazing. Do y’all listen to Shane and Shane? The owner is one Shane’s brother. They are so so nice too!

  13. I would still watch if you purchased a regular house and used the tiny home as a rental, in the backyard. It would be interesting to see you guys bring a tiny home to a property and clear it, too. Either one is going to be a long term extremely smart investment. Our small home value has gone up three times the value since we purchased it. I’ve been wanting to put a tiny home in the backyard for extra income, or for when we have company.

    • Yeah it’ll be a journey for sure! And yeah you’re right, a small house in the back would work great for either purpose!
